Cheap beginners coin holder.

Here is a cheap beginners coin holder. on mine I cut the pins down so they don't sit too high above the coin and get in the way when carving.  http://www.zakjewelrytools.com/products/peg-clamp-holder
Another thing you can use is hot melt glue from a craft store. glue the coin to a piece of broomstick and then put the block of wood in a vise to hold while carving. freeze it when done carving and pop the coin off the wood when done.

Another inexpensive option:  I like to use green dopping wax to hold coins, usually mounted to a 2" piece of aluminum T-Bar.  It's a personal preference, but it leaves the edge of the coin unobstructed.  I never liked feeling the pins as I'm rotating a coin.
